Tokosei

It is unknown when exactly this Yakko performance in Kitakawa and Sasao districts began but according to an old saying, it was started to pray for rain when there was a drought which continued for over two years. The only drought that lasted more than two years in the past was in the 4th and 5th year of the Tenmei Era (about 200 years ago), so it is believed to have started at that time. Kitagawa district used to belong to Taneyama (now Toyo-machi) Tenaga. However, since the drought of 1873, Tokosei became part of the Miyahara Sanjin-gu Autumn Festival procession and continues to this day. The main movement of the 'Yakko' (samurai's assistant or chivalrous man) is 'shaking' to make it rain, which also has another meaning of raining happiness down on each house.
