The Uchigata Ryujin Drum Dance consists of flutes, bells, drums, dancers in Oni (demon) costumes, and general dancers. There are two types of drumming: "michigake" and "hayagake. The oni dance to the beat of the drums, while the dancers hold the hanasaihai (a kind of baton with flower like decorations on each end) with their fingertips, turn it skillfully, and swing it up to the sky, chanting "yoi sassa~ yoi sassa~". It means "bountiful rain, hurry to fall." It encourages rain from the heavens by asking the god of heaven for rain. The Oni masks used in the Drum Dance can be traced back to when Tobase Island was under the jurisdiction of Aso Shrine Clan. When the rice was harvested in the fall, bandits on boats would attack and steal the harvest. Hearing the villagers' lamentations, the Aso clan’s representative gave them a demon mask used in Noh plays and taught them how to chase away the bandits. It is said that the appearance of the demon made the bandits fearful, and from then on they no longer attacked the island.
