Yatsushiro Myoken Festival: Shinto Processon

Active

Category Name:Rites and Festivals (folk belief)

In 1636 (Kan-ei 13), Hosokawa Sansai donated portable shrines and ritual items to Myoken-gu Shrine (currently Yatsushiro Shrine) to revive the festival, which has been passed down to the present day. The kida, a mythical animal that combines a turtle and a snake said to have been ridden by Myoken Bosatsu when crossing the sea; the shishi-mai, a Chinese-style lion dance; and magnificent pagoda-shaped floats all embody distinctive regional characteristics. With a procession composed of yama, hoko, and yatai floats, it is a typical example of urban festivals that developed in castle towns in the early modern period. This is a large-scale festival representing southern Kyushu, and was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
